haddo house choral & operatic society toggle navigation menu what’s on buy tickets events haddo arts festival past events join in rehearsals groups membership support us hhcos friends opportunities for individuals opportunities for businesses hhcos steinway appeal about us news our mission our facilities our history our people contact us find us on facebook follow us on twitter join us! hhcos is an unauditioned choir and we would love you to join us. we rehearse on thursday evenings in the peatyards at haddo. there are various points during the year that you can join us. click for more information. what's on we have many events on throughout the year. click for more information, welcome to haddo house choral & operatic society haddo house choral & operatic society (hhcos) is a large and vibrant choral society based at the beautiful haddo house located in rural aberdeenshire 18 miles north of aberdeen city in the north east of scotland. with a history going back over 70 years, the society has consistently produced concerts and operas of a high standard, working with professional orchestras, singers and conductors and is the oldest society in scotland to still produce an independant professional opera using its own chorus. musical director, paul tierney, takes the rehearsals and he and the committees that run hhcos are determined to maintain professional organisation alongside a very high standard of performance. the choral society is widely recognised as being one of the strongest in the area with their busy schedule which includes an annual opera, a major concert and several carol events. some annual concerts and major opera productions are conducted by guest conductors such as timothy dean, ben parry, garry walker and david jones. hhcos has an adult choir and three youth choirs: haddo children’s voices, haddo girls and boys voices and the haddo voices ensemble. hhcos also covers the haddo combined treble voice choir who achieved recognition at national level in competitions such as bbc radio 3’s choir of the year competition where they were overall runners up in the uk in 2006. this choir is currently dormant. hhcos gives the local community the unique opportunity of working alongside professional artists brought in for producing and designing the opera, for the major solo roles and for playing in the orchestra for the opera and concerts alike. no one is turned away – all the hhcos groups operate a ‘no audition’ policy. these groups, along with other organisations that use the facilities at haddo are known as hug. altogether these groups involve many members of all ages and backgrounds. gifted amateurs take part in the wide range of productions including those from hhcos as well as musical shows from the the haddo youth music theatre and the haddo children’s theatre and youth concerts involving the haddo voices. this unique blend makes haddo the ultimate community arts centre. haddo also hosts the annual haddo arts festival in october, attracting top names for concerts, opera, exhibitions and workshops. many young people who have grown up in the area and who have performed at haddo in one or more of the ‘hug’ groups have gone on to study music and the performing arts at tertiary level. many young singers who have attended haddo since their school days have gone on to carve promising singing careers;
